The Power of Vulnerability
I forgot my iPod again today, but, amongst other things, I discovered I can listen to some TED talks on youtube, so I started with Susan Cain on The Power of Introverts. I am loving the book, Quiet, which contains so much more fascinating material than the talk. Then in the side bar came up Brene Brown on the The Power of Vulnerability. I recently read two posts by/about Brown and her work on The School of Life Blog, Why Vulnerability takes Courage, and Get Ready for a Vulnerability Hangover (I love that she wants to found a "Museum of Epic Failure" - there's a spot in there for me). So, I listened.
Brene Brown set out to do research on “connection”, discovered that what was unravelling connection for people was shame (or the fear that we are not worthy of connection), and along the way came to realise the importance of vulnerability – in brief. It’s engaging listening, and laugh-out-loud funny, as she tells how she ended up in therapy trying to deal with the results of her own research.
It's interesting to slot this under the umbrella of Christianity, when she discusses such things as the importance of worthiness and a sense of belonging.
