Sometimes you hear a line that snags you out of your inattention and lights your fire. I was listening to The Sacred podcast by Elizabeth Oldfield (who wrote Fully Alive, which is on my reading list) on the weekend and in particular an episode called ‘Becoming the People we Need at the End of the World’ in conversation with Sarah Wilson (author of This One Wild and Precious Life - Sarah is not a believer, but what she had to say was intriguing - and I suspect both those books have more substance than the rather cheesy titles might suggest), and in speaking about her Christian tradition Elizabeth says:
You were never promised that the world would go on forever. You were never promised stable democracy, comfortable prosperity ... What you were promised is that love is stronger than death.
Something to remember … especially as government elections loom all about.
P.S. Chesterton’s picture has nothing to do with anything, he’s just cute. And I guess he’s an unexpected feature in my life.
I also find “The Sacred” an interesting listen. Elizabeth’s eclectic range of guests have offered me insight into other perspectives, while not changing my allegiance to Him who promised “that love is stronger than death”. I am selective about listening - some perspectives I do not presently feel able to listen to.
